On the Wall

Well, Sir Charles of Dublin was right. I finally wrote one.

On the Wall
© 2005 George Reed

What dream you on, young Guenivere, looking down on waters clear.
Remembering when you became a queen.
Beware of faerie hunting horns, all the roses bearing thorns.
Oh, if you knew of all that might have been.

Each and every morning. I can see you on the wall.
Sweet perfection above me. Can I do anything but fall?

Arthur promised everything from Palaces to golden ring.
The service of a mighty table round.
Will you one day soon be sad at the loss of Galahad.
If the truth within is never found.

Merlin warned there was a chance love might die upon the lance.
Wheels turning that no one could see.
You live a life brave and pure. Shyness makes you seem demure.
Elegance, you are a tapestry.

Each and every morning. I can see you on the wall.
Sweet perfection above me. Can I do anything but fall?

My brother asked me with respect to stay behind and protect.
His lady when he rode off to the wars.
She stands upon the wall to wait as he rides out of the gate.
I take up my position by the door.

I am proud to watch begin. No danger will I let within.
I will guard her as if she were mine.
It cannot be I’d let him down. I serve my just and royal Crown.
And I shall so do for all of time.

Each and every morning. I can see you on the wall.
Sweet perfection above me. Can I do anything but fall?

As I stand here by the door, army comes home from the war.
No where among them the King.
Knights return to table round, none among them yet have found..
He who made an ancient people sing.

Lady standing with a tear, shoulders shivering in fear.
Whatever can be passing through her mind.
Her burden is a queenly lot, and I am only Lancelot.
Remembering our once upon a time.

Each and every morning. I can see you on the wall.
Sweet perfection above me. Can I do anything but fall?

Something that a wise one said drifting now through my head
The greatest adoration stays inside.
Arthur has at last come home. His queen need not dwell alone.
And I stand here silent by their side.

Each and every morning. I can see them on the wall.
Sweet perfection above me. I must do anything but fall…
