On a Hill

On a Hill
© 2005 George Reed

My hero fell from lifted height unto the plain below
My hero dwelling far away and little did I know
Day would when I must chose between him and the right
My hero fell and I must go and walk the sleepless night

My hero counts the bitter sands and lonely vigil keeps
My hero fell and I have made the mighty Falcon weep
Such morning is at length will come and it is not a dream
My hero fell, and silence reigns to ponder all it means

I look within the even sky and see a light is gone
That used to beckon clearly, shining every dawn
I walk upon a shadowed road into a different night
And muse upon the day before and hope he finds the light

By which we once all knew the star, proud in Heaven’s sky
Above the space where dolphins swim and mighty falcons fly.
