Lullaby for Jamie

Lullaby for Jamie
© 2005 George Reed

My child, I see you sleeping through the dark of night
embraced in peaceful slumber until the morning light
While you are yet drifting in dreams within my arms
May peace all embrace you and keep you free from harm

I know there comes a morrow, I dread that looming day
When forces of the turning will take you far away
For now I wait the weeping and sing a gentle song
while you now lie sleeping, may your peace be long

No danger will I let near, I will not think twice
To leap before to guard you, and any sacrifice
Is worth your peaceful slumber so rest you well my dear
You never need have nightmare while my arms are here

Each smile in your resting, a dream I cannot share.
I only hope when they come true I will still be there
I offer my tomorrows, and give you free today
And when is time I’ll be a light to open up the way.

No one can be sure, dear, what tomorrow brings
I only know you slumber as I gently sing
I only know you slumber, awaiting a new day
And when I say I love you, I mean just what I say.

When you come to wake up, great mountains you will climb
to find the cookie jar, perhaps, or bookshelves that are mine.
I know I can’t be angry, no matter what the trial
All such things fade away when you give a smile

Dawn is fast approaching, our peace is at an end
Soon you go off on your own to seek a world of friends
You seek a new adventure on a sunny day,
But when I say I love you, I mean just what I say…
