Francis and me
Francis and me
(c) 2005 George Reed
Come you! Adventure with Francis and me
Sail on the morrow upon the high sea
Come you! Oh come adventure to find
Swift as the wind, proud Golden Hind
In Seventy Eight he gave me a name
That later earned stories and far running fame
I took him with care to ends of the world
Elizabeth’s banners proudly unfurled.
Come you! …
Armadas may come and armadas may go
My captain’s command will lay them all low
Long after we rest in Buckland our home
They will take grog down with Davey Jo
Come you! …
Sailing out west and south by the moon
Listen to stars whispering tune
Listen to waves telling a tale
Of how Cap’n Drake never can fail
Come you! …
We traveled the straights and home to the sound
Brought to fair Lizzie the treasure we found
She came out to see me and praise for the fight
And on my high deck saw Francis a knight
Come you! …
Off to the Indies and off to the Main
A singe to the beard of Philip of Spain
Begun with a vision, it ended in glee
And a Queen dining on board with Francis and me.
Come you! …
Defiance carried him once more away
In honor in Deptford I would remain
To tell all the world of our victory
While in Puerto Bello he rests in the sea
Come you! …
My journey is over, no one calls my name
I travel no more to the Spanish Main.
Though some sailors say at night you may find
A sight of the lanterns of fair Golden Hind
Come you! …
