Everything
Everything
© 2005 George Reed
When I reflect on roads I’ve been on
I have to admit it is strange
I feel like a fool still reaching for jewels
Knowing they’re well out of range
Everything that I sing, everything that I teach
Tells me all I need remains out of reach
I walk on the shore and ponder before
Along a great inland sea
Slow rolling wave, a dream I can’t save
Could it be destiny?
Everything that I sing, everything that I teach
Tells me all I need remains out of reach
Glimpse past a turn, at sunset that burns
flaming within my heart.
As I reach out, rushing past doubt
Daylight faded to dark
Everything that I sing, everything that I teach
Tells me all I need remains out of reach
You cry out in pain, strike out in vain
Forest remains…silent and deep
I wait in a glade where I should have stayed
Praying for blessing of sleep.
Everything that I sing, everything that I teach
Tells me all I need remains out of reach
So I reflect on roads I’ve been on
I have to admit there is pain
I feel like a fool still reaching for jewels
Knowing they’re well out of range
