Compassion

Compassion
© 2005 George Reed

First spoken at the Runestone, for the vigil of Sir David Dragonhawk.

Your king has called you to His side…
A choice is offered, pray decide…
An Order waits, arms are wide…
At cross of roads you need decide…

Your deeds are many, regrets are few…
An accolade bestowed on you…
By a king whose reign will end…
This night will never come again…

Sitting calm beneath the stars…
Remember well who you are…
When others come to pass your way…
Remember where you were today…

Wish I may and pray I might…
To speak a word on vigil night…
Though the term be rare in fashion…
I commend to you, Compassion…

The grace to give when others take…
Strength to watch a young mistake…
Wisdom, calm, and love in ration…
Our children need a peer’s compassion…

For you can teach and guide and show…
While giving youth the room to grow…
Love your art, if pen or sword…
Take earned respect as just reward…

Your name will ring in ancient halls…
You take an Oath before us all…
With master works and battles won…
Your journey has but just begun…
