Brotherhood

Brotherhood
© 2005 George Reed

Gather round me bucko’s…pull yourselves up a chair…
I’ll tell a tale sure to bring a smile and a tear…
About a lad who sought adventure, journeyed far from home…
Over mountains white with snow….to far lands all alone…

Oh to be a soldier, tall and brave with shining sword…
A shield, and suit of finest mail…
He’d march at the forefront of the army with the king…
Wield a righteous blade with honor bright and pure…

But never the bright way did he go…
Never shining honor did he know…

He came among the hard men of the mercenary corps…
Paid in gold to shed the blood of fellow men…
No more a young boy, walked the streets…the taught him how to be…
A man to love a women… to wield a blade…

Laughing faces, tavern bars, a soldier’s eyes are filled with sights…
The boy-man….he ate life with brightly shining teeth…
Folk he met, hard ones all, the Brotherhood of War…
Trained to draw their swords at the silver call…

But never…

Before his first battle, alone he sat in the dark…
Wondering would he live or would he die…
The trumpets sounded “Charge!” Banners fluttered o’er the host…
The boy-man drew his shining sword…

Long toil followed day-break, many brave men fell in pain…
The boy-man struggled on in the brotherhood of war…
When it was all over, alive, he stood upon the field…
The harvest of the brotherhood of war…

But never…

Boy man looked around himself, sadness filled him like a lake…
There was no honor in the shedding of men’s blood…
Laughing faces smiled no more, so many voices silent…
Tavern bars would never more echo with their glee…

Trudging weary, back he walked, across mountains white with snow…
Back to where a boy could be a boy…
Adventure does not dwell in the sheath of shining sword…
There is no joy in the brotherhood of war…

But never the bright way did I go…
Never shining honor did I know…

So gather round me bucko’s…pull yourself up a chair…
Hear a tale of smiles, hear a tale of tears…
About the time I sought adventure…journeyed far from home…
Over mountains white with snow…wandering alone…
