Autumn
Autumn

Born in late autumn down in Tennessee…
To hard working parents, the Cooks and the Reeds…
In that log house he greeted the world…
And over the years had three boys and three girls…
Just out of high school and barely eighteen…
He served in the army in the Phillipines…
In fifty seven he found a new dawn…
And forty six years of Mary and John…
Mary and John… Two become one…
Sharing travels and trials and love…
Traveled the country with his new bride…
Always most happy with her by his side…
Mary and John made a good life…
He never stopped loving his best friend and wife…
He taught me to take the harder, right path…
And face a rough road with a smile and a laugh…
The humor in people, the humor in things…
How easy the job if you whistle or sing…
Mary and John… Two become one…
Sharing travels and trials and love…
After long trials, God called him home…
And it’s easy for us to feel left alone…
But when I laugh or do something right…
I know that his spirit is with me tonight…
Ever since that late autumn down in Tennessee…
When God gave a gift to the Cooks and the Reeds…
Footsteps to take and a message to send…
The lantern may pass but the journey won’t end…
